23 Oktober 2018 | Italië, Sardinië

Story continued…

When we got stuck in Pescara (which is half-way the east coast of Italy) with engine problems, we had to change our plans. Pescara is not the most interesting and exciting part of Italy and because we wanted to continue travelling we decided to rent a car and temporarily leave the campervan behind at the Opel dealer.

After driving two hours inland to order a reconditioned engine, we continued our trip to the south of Italy.

Gargano National Park in the south-east of Italy was definitely worth visiting; but we didn’t really like the other parts of the 500 kilometres coastal drive.
Next on the list: Sicily! On Monday 24th of September we took the ferry from Italy mainland to Sicily and drove around the island in only five days. Yes, I know, it already was a crazy plan to start with… ;-)
Although we didn’t have much time, we’ve seen so many beautiful places, including some amazing overnight accommodations we booked day by day via Booking.com.
Places visited included: Alcantara Gorge, Taormina, Isola Bella, Alcantara Gorge, Siracusa, Agrigento, Valle dei Templi, Scala dei Turchi, Trapani, Cefalu, Capo D’Orlando. And the best overnight stay was at Casa Piccolo Paradiso, which was also our last night on Sicily. If you ever go to Sicily, this is the must-stay.

In the next three days we made our way back to Pescara; after leaving Siciliy we first drove along the south-west coast of Italy and then inland crossing from west to east via Pesche to pick-up the reconditioned engine, arriving in Pescara on Monday 1st of October. We definitely used the rental car to the max: close to 3,000 kilometres in 11 days! 

Back in Pescara, we dropped off the reconditioned engine at the Opel dealer where they swapped the two engines. Unfortunately that took them another week…
But also some good news: we successfully survived this massive challenge, the campervan was finally back on the road again and the engine is running better than ever before!

After this unexpected breakdown and delay, we finally could finish our big trip at our most favourite island: Sardinia!!
We made our way back from east to west, straight to Civitavecchia (close to Rome) to catch the overnight ferry, arriving at Sardinia on Wednesday 10th of October early morning.
Spending 11 days driving around this beautiful island and enjoying every minute of it is just the best thing in the world. And because the real holiday season was over, we also found some magical remote spots to camp, including the campsite where we also camped 10 years ago: Isola dei Gabbiani.

But unfortunately every holiday has to come an end at some point; we took the overnight ferry back to Livorno on the mainland and on Sunday 21st October early morning we safely arrived home…

Summary of our big trip:
52 days – 1 campervan – 1 rental car – 7 ferries – 4 countries – 9,000 kilometres (8,000 road & 1,000 sea)
What an amazing adventure!

    Esther Derks:

Wat ziet dat er allemaal prachtig uit! Fijn dat jullie, ondanks de tegenslag met de camper, zo'n mooie reis hebben gemaakt! xx Esther
